Penance

July 25, 2026

I built a room of silent stone,
where I could bear my grief alone.
No judge appeared, no sentence came,
so I pronounced my own in shame.

I wore regret like iron chains,
counted heartbeats, counted pains.
If tears could pay what I had done,
I’d fill the oceans one by one.

I thought that every aching breath
should echo like a little death,
that every smile I dared to keep
was one more promise I should not reap.

So let the nights be cold and long.
Let every memory stay strong.
I’ll hold the shards within my hands
As they cut and bleed what love demands.

Because the heart that broke a trust
believes that sorrow is a must.
It kneels before its own despair
and whispers, “Leave me wounded there.”

Yet guilt is strange, it feeds the fire,
then names the ashes my desire.
It tells me pain is all I’m worth,
that I deserve no second birth.

So here I stand with bleeding palms,
unable to accept life’s psalms.
Still learning that remorse can stay
without consuming every day.

This pain will linger, if only to teach
Of love so close, but too far to reach.
The heart that shattered what it held
Must bear the silence it has dealt.

So every dawn will find me here,
With hollow hope and faithful fear.
For some mistakes outlive the years,
And bloom forever through my tears.
