She woke where the moss embraced the earth,
beneath a canopy stitched with emerald light.
No voices called her name.
No footsteps lingered.
Only the hush of leaves
breathing with the wind.
She lay there for a while,
waiting for the ache she had carried
to settle upon her chest once more.
But it never came.
The chains she had placed upon herself,
the invisible stones tucked inside her pockets,
the questions that had echoed through sleepless nights – all had vanished with the dawn.
The silence did not frighten her.
It welcomed her.
She closed her eyes
and listened to the forest speak
in the language of rustling branches
and distant birdsong.
“Is the chaos of being loved,” she wondered,
“worth more than the peace of simply being?”
The question drifted into the trees,
and the trees, wise enough not to answer,
simply stood.
She rose from the forest floor,
brushing fallen leaves from her dress,
and wandered without destination.
There was no map.
No promise.
No waiting hands.
Just the gentle rhythm of one foot before the other.
Eventually, she found a quiet brook,
its crystal waters carrying yesterday
to places she would never see.
A weathered log rested along the bank,
and she sat upon it,
watching the current weave around stones
that refused to move.
As she watched the brook,
she thought to herself
that strength was not found
in chasing every passing current.
It was found in becoming more like stone,
unwavering,
while the water carried away
everything that wasn’t strong enough to remain.
The water continued its endless journey.
The wind carried the scent of pine.
The forest asked nothing of her.
And neither did she.
A faint rustle stirred across the brook.
She lifted her gaze.
There, half-hidden among the ferns,
a fox stood quietly between the trees.
His amber eyes met hers for only a heartbeat,
curious,
cautious,
unmoving.
Neither called to the other.
Neither crossed the water.
After a lingering moment,
the fox disappeared into the forest,
his fiery tail vanishing like a memory
carried gently by the leaves.
From somewhere deep beyond the hills,
a bear’s low call rolled through the woods.
It echoed through the pines with a calm, familiar strength.
He was distant, yet reassuring.
Like a quiet reminder
that there were still gentle souls
wandering the same forest.
His sound carried no urgency,
no expectation,
only the promise
that she was safe.
She closed her eyes
and let the call settle over her
like a warm blanket beneath the stillness of the trees.
She listened as the sound faded
into the same silence from which it came.
The brook continued to sing.
The forest continued to breathe.
And she realized not every creature she encountered was meant to walk beside her.
Some were meant
to remind her
that she was no longer lost.
So she remained upon the weathered log,
not waiting to be chosen,
nor chasing footsteps through the trees.
She listened.
She breathed.
She remained in the stillness
wondering where her footsteps
might choose to lead her next.
