I wonder in the quiet night,
If I’d still linger in your sight.
Her greenish eyes, her softer voice…
I wonder if she’d be your choice.
Would my smile fill your days,
Or would you long for all her ways?
Would you have chosen her instead,
If fate had turned another thread?
I knew you long before she came,
Long before your love found flame.
We shared our laughs, our passing ways,
Yet hid our hearts throughout our days.
Then she arrived with little time,
And somehow changed your heart and mind.
She found in months what I could not,
The place within your heart she sought.
And though today you keep me near,
There’s still one thought I cannot clear.
It lingers softly in my head,
A quiet fear I never said.
If she returned and called your name,
Would everything remain the same?
Or was the love you have for her
The one you secretly prefer?
Would I still be the hand you’d hold,
The story waiting to unfold?
Or just the chapter written through
Until she can come back to you?
These thoughts arrive when nights grow deep,
When silence robs my soul of sleep.
They tell me love can disappear,
The moment she is standing here.
Should I be more like her somehow?
Should I become somebody now,
Whose eyes reflect a different hue,
Whose voice is like the one you knew?
Or is it simply this I fear,
That I am loved ‘cause she’s not here.
That if one day she crossed your path,
You’d hold her tight… and not look back
I’d never ask you this aloud,
Nor speak these fears above a crowd.
I ask myself if you prefer
The woman who is more like her.
