The Storm Between the Trees

August 3, 2026

The woman wandered farther
than she had ever dared before.

The familiar brook
had long since disappeared,
its gentle song swallowed
by towering pines
that stood like silent guardians
beneath a darkening sky.

She searched for the path
she thought she had known,
but every trail
looked like the last.

Then came the wind.
Soft at first.
A whisper through the branches.
Then stronger.
Until the whole forest
began to groan.

The clouds gathered
like bruises across the heavens,
and rain fell
in scattered drops
that quickly became
an endless curtain.

She wrapped her arms around herself,
shivering.

Her stomach ached with hunger.

Her legs trembled with exhaustion.

She called out.

“Is anyone there?”

Only the storm answered.

Again she cried,
her voice breaking beneath the thunder.

“Please…”

But no hand reached through the rain.

No lantern pierced the darkness.

Only loneliness
walked beside her.

She sank beneath
an ancient cedar,
burying her face
against her knees.

“I can’t do this.”

Her words dissolved
into quiet sobs.

Then…from somewhere beyond the trees,
came the deep,
steady call
of a bear.

Not loud.

Not frightening.

Just enough
to remind the forest
she was not
entirely alone.

She lifted her head.

She could not see him.

Only the faint silhouette
of his great form
standing high upon a distant ridge,
watching the storm
without fear.

The bear did not cross the valley.

He did not carry her
through the rain.

His low voice rolled gently
through the wind.

“Do not run from the storm.”

She listened.

“Feel the rain.”

The cold stung her skin.

“Feel the thunder.”

The earth trembled beneath her.

“Feel the fear.”

Her tears mingled
with the falling sky.

“No creature reaches spring
by pretending winter never came.”

She closed her eyes.

The storm did not end.

The hunger did not vanish.

The darkness did not retreat.

But something inside her became quieter.

The bear had never promised
to stop the storm.

Only that storms
could be survived.

So she rose,
her clothes heavy with rain,
her heart still aching,
and took one uncertain step
through the darkness.

Then another.

While somewhere
beyond the veil of trees,
the bear remained
a steady voice carried upon the wind.

He reminded her
that even the fiercest storms
cannot rain forever.
