If I Could Mend You

September 17, 2026

If I could find the pieces that still ache inside,
The ones you keep protected, the ones you learned to hide,
I’d gather every fragment with gentle, careful hands,
Not making you heal faster, than your heart demands.

I’d sit beside the places where old wounds left their mark,
And bring a little candle to the corners that feel dark.
I wouldn’t try to change you or erase what you’ve been through,
I’d simply whisper, “You’re still loved,” until you felt it too.

If trust was once a doorway someone shattered long ago,
I’d never force it open just to prove I wouldn’t go.
I’d wait outside it patiently, with nothing left to prove,
And let the stable actions of my love make your heart move.

I wish that I could reach inside and take away the pain,
Undo the nights you questioned if you’d ever trust again.
I wish my arms could somehow hold the hurt you never show,
And carry half its weight until you’re ready to let go.

But healing isn’t something I can do on your behalf,
I cannot rewrite yesterday or give you your trust back.
So I will love you gently, without pulling at the seams,
And give your heart the room it needs to rediscover dreams.

I’ll show you through my choices what my promises intend,
Not asking you to hurry, not demanding that you mend.
And maybe with enough tomorrows, steady, warm, and true,
The broken parts will learn that love can safely reach them too.

And if I had one wish for you, beyond what we could be,
It wouldn’t be that someday you would give your heart to me.
I’d wish that every wounded piece you carry deep within
Could finally know the peace of feeling whole and safe again.

Because I don’t love you only for the man I hope to see,
Or for some future version standing healed in front of me.
I love the man before me with his scars and history,
And as you slowly heal within, I’ll love you patiently.
