The Devil came back when the whole house was still,
Not raging with fire, but calm with his will.
He sat at the edge of her bed with a grin,
Like an old, patient friend she had once welcomed in.
“I told you,” he whispered. “I told you before.
They leave you behind, then they close every door.
You wait and you wonder. You gave all you had.
Now look at your life. Tell me you aren’t sad.”
She stared at the ceiling and swallowed her tears,
While he gathered her doubts from the wreckage of years.
He knew every wound, every bruise, every scar,
And exactly which words made them hurt from afar.
“No one is coming. No one even cares.
No one lies in the dark, wishing you were there.
No one is searching or calling your name.
You vanish from lives and they stay just the same.”
“You’re not worth the trouble, the effort, the drive.
They’ll miss you a moment, then get on with their lives.
You pour out your heart till there’s nothing to spare,
Then wonder why no one is waiting right there.”
“How many times must they show you it’s true?
How many people must stop choosing you?
You keep calling it hope, but I call it a curse;
You expect something better; it only gets worse.”
“You think if you’re patient, somebody will stay.
You think if you love them, they’ll love you that way.
But haven’t you noticed? You’re always the one
Still holding the pieces when everyone’s gone.”
His voice sounded gentle. That made it much worse.
Each sentence familiar, each syllable rehearsed.
He wasn’t inventing some new kind of pain.
He was taking old heartbreak and giving it name.
“You could disappear and the world wouldn’t know.
No one would notice the place where you’d go.
You’re simply too much when you want to be seen,
And never enough to be anyone’s dream.”
Her eyes filled with tears, but she wouldn’t agree,
Though his words found the darkest parts she couldn’t see.
Because somewhere inside her, beneath all the ache,
A small voice reminded her lies cause heartbreak.
“You told me,” she whispered, “but that doesn’t mean
That every cruel thing that you say can be seen
As proof that I’m worthless because I’m alone.
Being left doesn’t mean I’m unworthy of home.”
“Maybe nobody’s searching or calling tonight.
Maybe nobody’s coming to make this all right.
Maybe I’m lonely. Maybe that’s true.
But loneliness doesn’t make your lies true too.”
“I’ve spent too much time letting silence decide
What I must be worth to the people outside.
Their absence is theirs. It is not who I am.
I won’t measure my soul by the reach of their hands.
“I still keep on waiting, though I’m tired of pain.
I’m tired of giving and losing again.
But tired isn’t worthless, and lonely isn’t weak,
And silence from others does not get to speak”
“For whether I’m worthy of somebody’s time,
For whether this battered heart matters – it’s mine.
So sit there and whisper. Say all that you will.
I’m hurting tonight… but I’m breathing here still.”
The Devil went quiet. His smile disappeared.
For pain was his weapon, but truth interfered.
He came there expecting she’d finally agree,
Instead she looked straight at him – “You don’t define me.”
He rose from her bedside and slipped through the night,
But promised he’d visit when things weren’t all right.
She knew he would come when the loneliness grew,
But the Devil could never make lies become true.
