She used to wake with sorrow in her chest,
A restless storm that never let her rest.
A glance from him could shift her whole somehow,
His silence once could break her, but not now.
She used to measure every little thing,
The warmth he’d give, the distance he would bring.
She searched his face for something she could read,
As though his eyes held answers she would need.
Her body learned to brace before her mind,
To fear the cold whenever he’d been kind.
One moment close, the next he’d pull away,
She would spend her peace decoding every day.
But something in her lately has grown still,
Not numbness, not resentment, not sheer will.
It’s softer than the sadness she once knew,
A quiet understanding she’ll get through.
He looks away? That’s fine.
He says hello? That’s nice.
She doesn’t search for meaning
Or make her heart pay twice.
His silence can remain without a name.
His distance doesn’t set her heart aflame.
She doesn’t chase the warmth when it withdraws;
She lets it leave without demanding cause.
There’s freedom now in giving people space,
In letting others simply take their place,
Without deciding what they do or don’t
Believe she’s worth – as though their choices vote.
She’s noticing the world outside him too,
The things she’d missed when he consumed her view.
A compliment. A stranger’s lingering stare.
Someone who thinks she’s beautiful right there.
And now she smiles and simply lets it land,
Enjoys warmth without extending out her hand.
Attention doesn’t have to feed a need,
Sometimes it’s simply lovely to be seen.
She doesn’t need another to repair,
The places where she begged someone to care.
She doesn’t need romance outside her door
To know there’s still a life worth living for.
Today she sits peacefully alone,
Without that restless aching in her bones.
The world keeps moving, patients come and go,
Somewhere he exists – and that she knows.
No racing heart.
No story to create.
No watching doors
Or wondering if he’ll stay.
No desperate search for comfort or relief.
Just her.
Her work.
Her breathing.
And her peace.
She doesn’t know exactly where she’ll go,
And for the first time, doesn’t need to know.
There’s nothing chasing her, no need to flee,
No love to hold her peace as a hostage fee.
And maybe this is freedom after all,
Not being wanted every time he calls.
Not being chosen, rescued, or pursued,
Not measuring her worth by someone’s mood.
She spent so long believing that love meant,
Waiting for someone else to be content.
But freedom came the moment she could lose,
With nothing left to prove that they should choose.
She doesn’t need his warmth to feel alive.
She doesn’t need his gaze to know she’ll thrive.
She doesn’t need another heart to tell,
She’s deserving of the peace she’s found as well.
